With its U Shaped design [ 4 inches deep x 1-2 inches wide] , the unit is open at the top to allow your natural hair to be combed and blended over the unit for a convenient time saving install.  
"LEAVE OUT " U-PART (optional) : Very similar to a NATURAL LEAVE OUT SEW IN. The Perimeter is left out for natural hair to to achieve a more "natural" look for ponytails, hair behind the ear , etc.
